The Elwha River Casino is owned by The Lower Elwha Klallam tribe. The tribe resides in the Lower Elwha River Valley and is adjacent to the bluffs on the north side of the Olympic Peninsula, just west of Port Angeles, Washington. The Elwha Klallam Tribe is traditionally known as "The Strong People."
According to Elwha Klallam legend, one day during a gathering to build a longhouse, they outsmarted other tribes in a log-lifting contest, floating a huge log into the water and onto the shoulders of the strongest Elwha men. The men walked out of the water, easily carrying the log on their shoulders, to shouts of, "Klallam! Klallam!" which means "Strong People".
